VA Disability Calculator FAQ

Common questions about using our VA disability rating calculator

Is there a VA rating calculator?

Yes! Our free VA disability calculator above helps veterans estimate their combined disability rating using the official VA formula. Unlike simple addition, the VA uses a specific combined ratings formula that applies each disability to your remaining capacity.

How do I use this VA disability calculator?

Simply search for your conditions or select from the dropdown menus, add each condition to your list, then click “Calculate Estimated Ratings.” The calculator automatically applies the bilateral factor for paired conditions and provides both conservative and optimistic estimates.

What conditions can I calculate with this tool?

Our calculator includes all VA-recognized conditions organized by body system: musculoskeletal, mental health, neurological, respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, and more. You can search by condition name or diagnostic code to find your specific disabilities.

How does the VA combined rating formula work?

The VA doesn’t simply add percentages. Instead, each disability is applied to your remaining capacity. For example: a 30% rating leaves 70% capacity, then a 20% rating applies to that 70% (20% × 70% = 14%), resulting in 44% combined (rounded to 40%). This prevents combined ratings from exceeding 100%.

⚖️ Calculated 70%+ But Can’t Work Due to Disabilities?

You may qualify for TDIU (Total Disability Individual Unemployability) which pays at the 100% rate ($3,737.85/month) even if your combined rating is below 100%.

TDIU Paths:
  • Schedular (38 CFR 4.16a): 60%+ single disability OR 70%+ combined with 40%+ single
  • Extraschedular (38 CFR 4.16b): Below threshold but unemployable due to combined effects

What BVA data reveals:

Veterans with functional limitations documentation (showing HOW disabilities prevent work) have 2.5x higher TDIU approval rates than those without.
